Sustainability is very important at Brandbjerg Folk High School – both as a main subject, in the kitchen and when the old buildings are to be renovated. The gas boiler has been replaced with a heat pump, and in the autumn, another heat pump will be connected to the system.

One of Denmark's largest folk high schools, Brandbjerg Folk High School, has replaced the gas boiler with a heat pump from ThermoNova. This is just one of many initiatives that the folk high school is working on to think more sustainably.

"Walk the talk is important to us. We have many ideas and dreams that hopefully can make us self-sufficient one day – but we are also aware that we must take small steps at a time so that the economy keeps up. And I think that is an important point, because sustainability is not just something we can tick off. It is a process that is constantly ongoing," explains Jesper Winther, Technical Manager at Brandbjerg Folk High School.

The folk high school has converted the entire heating system and replaced pumps, valves, pipes and gas boilers. When the choice about a heat pump was made, it became crucial to find a supplier who produced heat pumps with natural refrigerant. Therefore, they made an agreement with ThermoNova.

The financial accounts are not crucial – the climate accounts can be just as important to us Jesper Winther, technical Manager

Around 12,000 square meters need to be heated, and with the new measures on the heating system, the estimated financial savings will be up to 20 percent. The heat pump is modular, and therefore it is possible to connect another module in the autumn, so that the folk high school can continuously expand the heating system.

"We can't replace everything at once, so we do what's possible. Both small and large initiatives help reduce our climate footprint," says Jesper Winther.

The new module will be made together with Solar, which has collaborated with the folk high school for several years on projects and products.

"We use Solar on a daily basis when we need fast delivery of technical components. We do not have room for our own small inventory, so we order products as needed. It is an advantage for us that there is a large product range and fast delivery already the next day. In connection with the new heat pumps, we have been assigned a permanent project manager from Solar, who we hope can be our technical sparring partner through the process of making an old manor house and folk high school just a little less energy-guzzling," says Jesper Winther.
